Intricacies of intimacy behind the curtains
Is a novel by Carmen Martín Gaite that unfolds in a provincial Spanish city in the 1950s. The story follows a group of young girls as they seek their place in society after the Civil War and postwar period. Elvira Domínguez is one of these girls, facing the difficult choice between continuing her perfect yet socially oppressive life, marrying her boyfriend Emilio, or having an affair with her German teacher, Pablo Kein.
The novel also explores the struggles and challenges of other girls in the group, such as Natalia, Julia, and Mercedes. "Entrevisillos" is a tale of self-discovery and a reflection of Spanish society at the time.

Sketch of the visual proposal

Freedom
In the image, Elvira is seen through the curtains. She feels confined in a cage, trapped between her family's expectations and restrictive social conventions.
Guilt
The character of Julia wrestles with the guilt she feels about her thoughts. Despite this, she is torn between the love and desire she feels for her boyfriend and the social constraints they face. The scene takes place in a cinema, using the film reel to contextualize the space.
Appearance
Adult female characters constantly worry about their physical appearance and position in the community. The image portrays women seeking perfection, applying makeup, and sharing gossip over tea, revealing the appearance standards to which they are subjected.
Intrusion
The obsession with gossip and rumors among the city's inhabitants leads to constant intrusion into the characters' personal lives. The community's constant gaze makes them feel exposed and watched, creating a sense of lack of privacy. The image of Pablo Klein shows how, although he may seem free, he is drawn into gossip and mutual spying behind the curtains.
