Love, social strata, and shattered illusions
"Últimas tardes con Teresa" is a novel by Juan Marsé set in the Barcelona of the wealthy bourgeoisie and marginalized individuals that buzzed in the city during the 1960s. The novel tells the love story of Manolo, also known as Pijoaparte, a typical representative of the marginalized lower classes, whose greatest aspiration is to seduce Teresa, a beautiful blonde girl, university student, and daughter of the Catalan upper bourgeoisie.
The story begins when Pijoaparte arrives at a party in San Gervasio, a wealthy neighborhood, wearing a brand-new suit. There, he meets Maruja and has an affair with her, but when he discovers that she is not bourgeois, he is repulsed. He believes that by dating her, he can attract Teresa, a conflicted university student, blonde, and the daughter of wealthy bourgeois parents.
The novel's romantic appearance with social undertones recreates the atmosphere typical of a summer in Barcelona, tinted with a formidable satire that describes the personalities of the different social classes in the story.

Appearance
Pijoaparte meets Maruja at a summer party, both pretending to be someone they are not. He, a bourgeois gentleman, and she, playing incognito, do not entirely reveal her social class. Later in their relationship, Pijoaparte discovers, through aprons hanging in her room, that she is the maid of the Serrat family, ending their relationship almost immediately with a slap.
Accident and encounter
Maruja has an accident where she hits her head and is hospitalized during the summer months. There, Teresa and Pijoaparte (Manolo) coincide, and he takes the opportunity to strengthen ties with the high-society girl who is alone in the city. Teresa begins to admire Manolo for the values she believes they share. She idealizes him as a revolutionary worker fighting for social improvements and even introduces him to her university friends who are also "revolutionaries."

Death and separation
Months later, Maruja dies. After the event and aware of their daughter's relationship with Pijoaparte, Teresa's parents force her to return to the beach villa to keep her away from him. Teresa begins writing letters to Pijoaparte describing her feelings for him and how much she misses him. These letters end up being read by La Jeringa, a girl from the Carmel neighborhood who is completely in love with Pijoaparte and feels jealous of Teresa.
Destiny
Upon receiving this letter, Pijoaparte steals a motorcycle to go see Teresa, but bad luck follows him, and he is arrested by the police. La Jeringa has reported him. After two years in prison, Pijoaparte is released without having forgotten Teresa. He searches for her in the old meeting places but discovers that she has married and forgotten any revolutionary ideas she may have had during her university years. Each one returns to their social condition.
